I can say that I didn't have any restrictions on what commands I could or couldn't use. The lab does state that you are graded on getting a working solution and that you shouldn't make large sweeping changes, I.e. Replace RIP with OSPF. I don't remember the exact wording, but that was th general idea. Most of my fixes were only a couple lines but sometimes on more than one device.
