Matt,

There is no question that Linux has a better kernel and runs programs like
this with a slight performance edge. Unfortunately Linux always lacks on
the third party application side due to most companies still preferring to
develop applications for Operating systems where they can actually make
money ;) (Linux has a user base that inherently thinks everything should be
for free). Until that changes operating systems like Leopard and Windows
will always be preferred.

Now with that said Windows 7 does a pretty good job at running these
topologies now. Much better than any previous version of windows,
especially when you account that with the power of today's processors like
the i7's. So Windows 7 is definitely a viable option for studies.

I am a Linux power user, probably know more than most people on this list,
but until more companies port applications to Linux I will be using windows
primarily. I don't think I will ever use a MAC, I still feel MAC's are
overpriced for what you get, though they definitely have their perks.

Seriously FFS.

It takes about 20 mins to install ubuntu on a dual boot machine. This
includes the partition resizing on the cd you download.

Windows is CRAP at this stuff. Stop messing with it, stop asking why
you cant get it to work and just go with what does work.

I have "basic user" level unix knowledge and I got a windows machine
dual booted, GNS3 installed, and a full topology running faster than
what a windows box takes to log into a domain and open outlook.

This stuff makes me want to scream!!!!
