" ip nbar protocol-discovery" is not required for configuring QoS class-map
with matching protocol option. It is used to monitor the trafffic on the
interface. You can see a sample O/P below.
It is independent of QoS policy maps and you can see the o/p, even if there
is no policy configured on the interface.
As you said, we can use "ip nbar protocol-discovery" to monitor the traffic
and then configure QoS policies as required.
