to each their own... but without question renting is the cheaper way to go,
when you are speaking of real gear. GNS3 can do a lot for sure but you will
always end up needing to do some features on the real stuff.

I personally always find that when I build a rack of equipment for the CCIE I
want to go for I end up wasting so much time trying to duplicate the topology
it takes away from my study time. But that is my own personal experience.

May I ask how much (ball park) it cost to put together that lab? I can see the
value of having the physical gear but I don't know how i could afford it

Thanks

Hi,

I buyed my Lab and it was the best decission for learning for the CCIE Security
Lab. My Lab:

7 * 1841

2 * 3560

1 * 3550

2 * ASA 5510 with Security Lic.

1 * FR Switch

1 * TS Router

1 * 4215 with 6.0.5E

1 * Laptop with ACS 4.2

1 * Laptop as Test PC

I was able to practice whenever I wanted to and do some changes if I want. At
the Lab I was very very fast because I had a lot of practice.

It depends if you have the money to do it or not, but I think its worth buying
and practising with the real stuff.

My view .... :)

regards,

robert

Use Proctorlabs, no need to buy any hw for IE Sec and using Proctorlabs.

Addition to Proctorlabs use Dynamips.

Subject: [OSL | CCIE_Security] Newbie Question

Hello World!,

I have decided to jump into muddy waters of CCIE Security.

As an initial step, I have looked at Blue Print for Security and HW/SW
requirement.
Joined this group and looking for answers to some Newbie's Question:

1) Should I build the Lab or Should i go for proctorlabs (When i did CCIE
Voice, I rented proctorlabs but still i needed to buy phones, a switch, and a
router).

2) If you guys recommend to build a Lab then do i need all of the following
equipments or I can get away with some:

* Cisco 3800 Series Integrated Services Routers (ISR)
* Cisco 1800 Series Integrated Services Routers (ISR)
* Cisco Catalyst 3560 Series Switches
* Cisco ASA 5500 Series Adaptive Security Appliances
* Cisco IPS Series 4200 Intrusion Prevention System sensors
* Cisco Secure Access Control Server for Windows

Looking forward to your helpful comments.

thx
'eicc
