It is more a matter of what the application demands. If you have 
time to adjust gain and exposure each time you take a shot, cheaper
CMOS/USB is a way to go, although even those get expensive beyond the
1.3 Mpix. On automated systems, you need some means of full auto
exposure adjustments, and perhaps need to deal with lower light 
conditions which favours CCD. Finally, you can - within limits - 
offset low mag optics with a high pix res camera.
