BASIC FUNCTIONS
Designs and specifies information systems solutions to address business needs and the methods for installing them.

 

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Works with client management to identify and specify complex business requirements and processes (e.g., diverse development platforms, software, hardware, technologies and tools, etc.). Formulates logical statements of business, scientific and/or engineering requirements. Researches and evaluates alternative solutions and recommends the most efficient and cost effective solution for the systems design considering existing systems, available technology, the capacity and limitations of equipment, operating time and form of desired results. Works with development, operations, technical support and other IT areas as appropriate throughout the development and installation processes. Designs a detailed systems testing plan to ensure an accurate and effective product. May give some direction and guidance to other systems analysts. Prepares charts, tables and diagrams to assist in analyzing problems, utilizing, if necessary, various business, scientific and/or engineering mathematical techniques. Analyzes existing system logic difficulties and revises the logic and procedures involved as necessary. May assist in the supervision and preparation of logic flow charting. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Specific responsibilities:
Installs, maintains and supports vendor and proprietary research software for complex scientific systems in the Structure-based Drug Design group (Computational Chemistry and protein Crystallography).
Establishes and grows a strong client relationship with the scientists using the applications.
Manages technical relationship with the vendors.

Technical environment includes application systems from vendors such as Accelrys, Tripos, Schrodinger, CCP4, CCDC, PDB, HKL Research, DatOno, etc.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision and is competent to work at the highest level of all technical phases of system analysis while working on own most of the time.

Supervision Exercised: May act as Project Leader. May be involved in providing assistance and training to lower level Systems Analysts.

EDUCATION:

Master of Science

 

QUALIFICATIONS
M.Sc./Ph.D. in Chemistry or related field, with at least two years of experience in the development and support of scientific computer systems; Requires broad knowledge of the client area functions and industry standard commercial software; Experience in UNIX environments (programming, compiling, shell scripting, parallel processing, queuing systems, etc.) such as SGI-IRIX and Linux; Strong analytic and problem-solving skills; In-depth knowledge of system and technology alternatives; Excellent communication skills, strong judgment, and the ability to work effectively with client and IT management and staff.
