Hi Flip, this sounds like the dreaded OOM (out-of-memory) killer at
work!  Though on checking the VM requirements of refmac5 in v6 on my
system (SuSE 9.1) I see it's a modest 340 Mb, so unless your memory
(incl swap) is already full to the brim (i.e. < 340 Mb free), it's
unlikely to be the explanation, unless possibly you have a memory leak.

What's your total free memory before starting refmac (e.g. add up the
numbers from the 'top' output).
