Hi Peter:

transfer diffraction images from synchrotrons to the lab. Unfortunately, my
current Linux distribution RedHat Enterprise Linux 4 (RHEL4 U3) (based on
kernel 2.6.9) does not support USB disks.  I find this surprising. RHEL4 is
convenient, Dell ships PCs with it installed and we have an institutional
license that allows me to run up2date locally.


This is why we ditched Red Hat for Ubuntu Linux. It is a very nice and 100% free debian distribution. They will even send you the disks for free if you don't want to download and burn your own.

I can't comment on other options because Ubuntu and Red Hat are the only ones I've run, but I am very grateful to be rid of the RH clown show. Everything crystallographic seems to run fine on it, including proprietary software.
