Indeed the RHEL4 release notes state that the "initial release" does not support USB disks. Obviously they had some problems with the implementation, but I am quite sure they fixed it by now. So before leaving for another distribution make sure your system is updated to the latest release. That said, USB on linux is a pain most of the time, often related to permission issues rather than support by the kernel. Support for different types of USB chipsets may also vary.
