I wonder how the crystals diffracted :-)

Something different I had a case during my PhD work where I could decrease the mosaicity significantly from ~1.6 to 0.4 in average by a very simple method. The same incubator was used 24x identical conditions in two VDX plates sealed with silicon grease, one tray was directly placed into the incubator and another one was floating on top of a Styrofoam lid placed in 3 cm deep water. Guess which crystals had the lower mosaicity. But I don't know why exactly this worked. The "regular" trays are placed on heavy (maybe 20 kg) stone (marble?) plates to reduce vibrations. Sometimes the fan starts to adjust the temperature but I don't think this should have such a dramatic effect. I should also mention that these crystals were more on the fast side of growing, within 12 hours you would end up with something like 400x300x300 micrometers. One could actually see first tiny crystals shortly after setting up the trays (manually, at that time this still took more than 10 minutes).

Anybody has an idea why this could have happened ?
