Senior Research Scientist, Protein Crystallography
Position Description
Abbott Bioresearch Center seeks a highly motivated protein chemist/protein crystallographer within the Structural Biology group of the Chemistry Department. ABC, located 45 minutes west of Boston in Worcester, Massachusetts, pursues vibrant research programs on both traditional, low molecular weight pharmaceuticals for immunological and inflammatory disease as well as monoclonal antibody pharmaceuticals for all Abbott therapeutic areas. You will perform hands-on experiments in all stages of protein crystal structure determination in support of ABC drug discovery, from protein production to dissemination of structural results. The addition of new projects requires additional capacity in all stages of structural biology support, especially protein purification. You will interface with scientists at all levels within Chemistry, other departments at ABC, and with colleagues at Abbott Park. Exciting opportunities for both scientific and career development exist.
Required Education, Experience & Skills
Ph.D. degree in an appropriate discipline (e.g. chemistry, biochemistry, or physics) in which training was specifically in the field of protein crystallography. Recent Ph.D. candidates who are looking for experience in an industrial crystallographic and drug design environment are encouraged to apply.
Demonstrated hands-on expertise in purification and characterization of proteins is critical, as is expertise in protein crystal production and optimization, collection and processing of x-ray diffraction data, and structure determination, refinement, and dissemination of structural results.
Ability and willingness to travel to synchrotron radiation facilities for data collection is required. Strong analytical and communication skills are a must, as is a strong desire to work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary structure-aided drug design environment.
Desired Skills
Basic molecular biology techniques.
Implementation of robotic technologies. Minor equipment maintenance and
repair. Synchrotron radiation data collection.
