On my G5 with the 4500 stereo works fine in pymol and O. The CRT is the second monitor. The biggest problem was with the emitter. It turns out that the emitter connectors vary quite a lot in what they are supposed to do. The 'old' emitter I have is a Stereographics E-2 and it didn't work by simply plugging it in. The problem is that the 4500 connection doesn't send power to the emitter so you need an adapter that allows you to plug the emitter into an outlet. It is easy to get and fairly cheap. Once I plugged everything in stereo worked right away. I should add that it didn't work without the emitter. The company that I got the converter from ships a box with a lot of different connectors so there should be one for the NuVision. Contact info below.

You would require an E2ADAP. The price is $50.00.

Please let me know how you would like to proceed.

Hi Michael,

The naive questions:

1. For the quad G5s, is it plug and play for the most part? In their case, did the CRT have to be monitor 1 or 2?

The monitor numbering shouldn't matter as the stereo visual follows the window not the monitor. So you should be fine there.

2. Must there be a command line option set in PyMOL?

You should only have to use the menu item from the drop down list to turn stereo on or off.

3. Does the nVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 graphics board show stereo, even when the emitter is not plugged in (like the SGIs do)? If it does, then the problem is not a busted NuVision emitter.

I don't believe it does. I think the emitter turns on when stereo is actually on. However, I'm not certain if the NuVision emitter actually works on the Macs. I recall doing some tests last fall, and I have a vague recollection it did in my hands. But I think I've heard otherwise from others. The E2Mac emitter from Stereo Graphics definitely works.

4. Is there an application to test the driver and graphics board? I would like to find out if it is a driver or a hardware flaw.

The easiest test I can think of to try is to actually test this in O. Load up a molecule and press F1. If it doesn't go into stereo it's either the emitter or the graphics card (and I'd guess first that it's the emitter). Stereo in standard OpenGL definitely works on the new systems.

One other thing to mention is that as of a few weeks ago (and I'm not certain if this has changed, but I doubt it has) is that the Quadro FX4500 for PPC won't work in a MacPro currently, so you can't simply swap the cards out.

  Hope that helps,

Dave
