Hi, If it helps, a while ago I have stumbled on a NaCl crystallization article from circa 1948, I wish I could remember which journal (I think it's JACS but could have been something else!). They describe that (and other) crystal habits of halite (NaCl) and mention that the octahedral crystals grow from co-solutions of NaCl and certain amino acids, most prominently Alanine.
