Compounds containing the dimehtylthallium cation could well be excellent
heavy atom derivatives; for their preparation via trimethylthallium see
Lee and Sheldrick, J. Organometal. Chem. 17 (1969) 481-484 (I was a
chemist in those days). I should add that at the time we had no idea how
toxic these compounds are.

Thallium bromide/iodide crystals can find use as IR optics components. So
whoever works with unusual optics, may have some in stock.
I used http://www.americanelements.com/tlbr.html a long while ago.
Please note that Thallium compounds are extremely nasty (among other
wodnerful effects, it can cause complete hair loss). Most of them are
readily absorbed via skin, inhalation, etc.
I personally would rather work with Hg than Tl. If you absolutely must,
I'd try soaking Tl compounds at 1 mM for 0.5-1 hour, then slowly increase
dosage.

Does anyone know where to purchase thallium bromide (preferably in
Europe) and/or has any advice on the conditions to be used for
soaking/data collection of soaked crystals?
