Hi,
what happens the other way round, when you run solve/resolve using the
syminfo.lib from ccp4-6.0.2? If that works fine why not leave it that way?

We get errors with CCP4 with the environment variable is set for SOLVE.
We're using the latest versions of SOLVE and CCP4.
You get the error either by running something directly, like MTZDUMP on a
command line, or through the CCP4i GUI.
We DO set the environment variable as part of a set upon system login.
When we need to run CCP4, we have to redefine it directly:
setenv SYMINFO /disk.../ccp4-6.0.2/lib/data/syminfo.lib
Otherwise, it says that SYMINFO is incorrectly defined. I'll send the
error message offline to the CCP4 gurus.
Thanks for responding so quickly.

I don't see how this can be a problem because the SYMINFO environment
variable is only set and used internally by CCP4 programs (by the CCPFYP
routine when the program starts), i.e. the user should not be setting it
anywhere (and it's not set by ccp4.setup). Environment variables set by
a child process do not affect the parent process, so that when a CCP4
program terminates all evidence that the internal variables (i.e.
SYMINFO, HKLIN, XYZIN etc.) were set is erased. Variables set by the
parent process (e.g. the shell) _are_ inherited by the child processes
(e.g. the running programs), but any changes made by the child process
are not passed back to the parent. Presumably the SYMINFO set by SOLVE
is a regular environment variable set by sourcing a script, but it will
not be affected by any changes made internally by CCP4 programs.

SYMINFO is defined as an environment variable for both SOLVE
and CCP4. Can
one of the packages change their definition of this in future
releases? We
repeatedly need to redefine it, depending of whether we're currently
running a SOLVE or CCP4 job. Or is there a way around this?
