Sue,

I have the following 4 lines in /etc/rc.local:

if [ ! -e /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.ko ]; then
echo "installing NVIDIA kernel module. This takes some time."
   /root/NVIDIA.run --no-network -s -K -n
fi

This automagically recompiles the module after a kernel update. Works like a charm on all NVIDIA machines here. The only requirement is that /root/NVIDIA.run is a symbolic link to the propietary NVIDIA binary distribution package, which in addition has to be made executable, using "chmod +x".

HTH,

Kay

Hello Everyone

I'm sorry about asking a peripheral coot question, but here goes.

I have a linux system running RHE4. It's on automatic update. Occasionally (every few weeks) the update trashes my nvidia drivers. It seems to happen when the kernel is updated. When the user starts coot, the user gets immediately logged out. (same with pymol)

The fix is to reinstall the nvidia drivers. During the reinstallation I get a message that the drivers are being recompiled for an unsupported kernel (or something like that).
After reinstallation, everything works OK for a while.

Is there a fix for this syndrome other than turning off automatic update? (I realize another option would be to install a different linux, but other than this the system is working just fine).

Thanks

Sue
