The error message
** Unable to load *adobe-courier-medium-r*--8* font **
points out that the problem is not tcl- but X-related. I suppose that your
fonts in X are provided by the fontconfig library.
Either it is miss-configured or you are missing the correct package
containing the adobe-fonts.
I am not familiar enough with fonts in X (it's always been a big mystery
to me), but search your repositories for packages for fonts. Maybe you
find one that contains the name 'adobe'.

Dear colleagues,
On upgrading our machines to Mandriva Linux 2008 I see
extremely ugly fonts in CCP4i and Mosflm. It is almost
impossible to read the job list in CCP4i (see attached
screen shot). And Mosflm actually crashes with the error:
** xdl_view error in routine xdl_open_view **
** Unable to load *adobe-courier-medium-r*--8* font **
Other ActiveTcl dependent programs are also affected. This
was never a problem before, only happens with Mandriva
2008. Even Ubuntu 7.10 works fine (no clever comments
thanks about switching to an alternative OS, Mandriva 2008
is other wise outstanding).
As an example, we are running:
Dell Precision 390, Duo core 6700, nVidia Quadro FX 3450
with correctly configured drivers from nVidia.
Has anyone else seen this, or resolved it? Is an
alternative ActiveTcl version required, and how do I
implement this? Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.
Best wishes, Rob
