Dear All,
I personally do not find stereo useful when fitting density; by
using *proper* depth cueing (unlike what a certain more modern
fitting program uses) and rotating the molecule, one gets a sense of
depth.
All that is fine, however, where you are viewing the molecule by
yourself, and you are doing the driving. Your brain quite deftly
combines the perceived movement on the screen with how one moves the
mouse or joystick to provide a 3D effect. On the other hand, if you
are watching someone else rotate the molecule, it is very difficult
to get any feeling of depth. That is why, in our 3D theatre, we use
passive stereo when presenting structures to (small/large) groups of
people. The presence of stereo compensates for the inability to
actually control rotation yourself, and as such is an essential
tool. We have a quad G5 PowerMac, running 10.4.x, and we couldn't
upgrade it to 10.5 because of this problem.

By the way, have you all started to fill in the pages of your PDB-
submitted structures on Proteopedia?
