Open positions in structural biology of cytoskeletal proteins at the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Biology / DESY / University of Hamburg

Three positions funded by the Helmholtz Association are open in the research group of Asst. Prof. Inari Kursula at the University of Hamburg/DESY, Hamburg, Germany. The group is interested in protein- protein recognition, especially within the regulation of cytoskeletal proteins. Specific on-going research projects are related to the regulation of actin filament dynamics in the malaria and related parasites and histone deacetylases. The laboratory is located on-site at the DESY synchrotron campus, providing excellent facilities for structural biology research using synchrotron radiation.

Post-doctoral position
The successful candidate, possessing a Ph.D. in a relevant field, should have solid, proven experience in molecular biology, protein production, and preferably also crystallization and structure determination by X-ray crystallography. Experience in methods, such as microcalorimetry, surface plasmon resonance, CD spectroscopy, or other biophysical characterization of proteins and complexes, is considered an advantage, as is experience in baculovirus expression of proteins. The position will be filled for one year initially, with the possibility of an extension of 1-2 years.

Ph. D. student position
The applicants should hold a M.Sc. degree in a relevant field. Experience in molecular biology and protein production is necessary. The successful candidate should also have a strong interest in X-ray crystallography and biochemical/biophysical characterization of proteins. The contract will be for two years with the possibility to extend for a third year.

Laboratory technician (50 %)
The laboratory technician will be responsible for the every-day maintenance of the laboratory, technical assistance in research projects, and ordering of chemicals and other consumables. Experience in basic molecular biology, microbiology, and cell culture techniques is required. Interest in taking actively part in the research projects would be a definite plus. Working knowledge of German (in addition to fluent English) is considered an advantage for this position.

The positions will be filled from August-September 2009. The group is moving to Hamburg during summer 2009 and, for the time being, more information can be found from the website: http://www.biochem.oulu.fi/tutkimus/ikursula/ . The working language of the group is English, and a good knowledge of both spoken and written English is a requirement for all positions.

Applications (including a short description of research interests and experience, CV, list of publications, and names of two referees) and inquiries should be sent by e-mail to inari.kursula(at)oulu.fi. Applications will be considered until 10.7.2009 or until suitable candidates have been identified.
