If you want to use software to advance your research, the Collaborations
Workshop (CW11) on 3-4 March 2011 is the perfect opportunity to meet the
researchers, software developers, funders and other software experts that can
help.
Attendees can describe their research, and any problems they are experiencing,
in a short talk or by presenting a poster. They can then work on solutions with
other attendees in breakouts - small group discussions of generally 2-10 people.
Any event with the goal of forming collaborations needs to be flexible. Unlike
conventional academic conferences, the CW11 is based on a flexible agenda. The
workshop attendees suggest the topics for discussion, and choose which topics
make the agenda. This means that only the most relevant and important topics
are discussed.
For the uninitiated, a flexible agenda can feel like a leap of faith ("what
happens if I spend two days at the workshop, only to find that it's not
relevant to my work?"). We can't guarantee that you will meet people you’ve met
before and talk about the topics you've discussed in the past. Instead, we
guarantee that you will meet with interesting people from relevant backgrounds
who can help with your research.
Some quotes from previous workshops
“It was great to network with other researchers. The breakout sessions were a
good, dynamic way to run the meeting”
- Phil Kershaw British Atmospheric Data Centre.
“It’s been a very useful way for elaborating plans and drawing in other
partners to [our] project”
- Peter Turner Data-MINX, Sydney
“It is good to meet up with people that you don’t get to meet with on a regular
basis”
- Andrew Price University of Southampton
“scientists don’t understand computer science, and I feel that computer
scientists are now trying to do something about it”
- Louise Price UCL
