*POSTDOCTORAL POSITION IN STRUCTURAL BIOLOGY – LIGHT HARVESTING*

**

A Postdoctoral Research Associate position is available in the Protein Structure Group at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. The project (funded by ARC DP) is aimed at understanding photosynthetic light harvesting at a molecular level. We are looking for a candidate with expertise in at least one of the following: structural biology, molecular biology, protein science, biochemistry and/or microbiology.

By studying algal light harvesting proteins, we have discovered that they show the hallmarks of quantum phenomena (Collini et al., 2010, /Nature/ 463:644-7).Recently, we have shown that some algae have evolved the ability to switch between forms of light harvesting protein that either do or do not support quantum effects (Harrop et al., 2014, /PNAS/ 111:E2666-75).The question we wish to address is: do algae actually switch between these proteins (with and without quantum phenomena) and, if so, under what conditions?

The Postdoctoral Research Associate will be based at UNSW where we have in house facilities for growing algae, molecular biology, protein expression, purification and characterisation. Our laboratory is fully equipped with robotics for crystallisation and in house crystallographic data collection. We have regular access to synchrotron sources. UNSW has excellent facilities for proteomics and genomics. The project is part of an international collaboration where our partner labs will carry out ultrafast laser spectroscopy to investigate the optical properties of light harvesting proteins.

Research Associate Level A - $85K -$91K per annum ( plus 17% superannuation and leave loading) or Senior Research Associate Level B - $105K - $112K per annum (( plus 17% superannuation and leave loading)

Fixed Term for two years with the possibility of extending to a third year depending on funding.

Applicants must be made online via the UNSW jobs website:
