Hi, Ursula, I have the same problem on my Pymol version 2.5.1 on the Mac Mojave system, I posted a solution from an old thread below that solved the problem.
"This looks like missing shader support, which is unexpected on modern Mac hardware. Can you try to set the "use_shaders" setting? PyMOL> set use_shaders, 1 If this fixes it, then please check your ~/.pymolrc file if the use_shaders setting is wrongly disabled there (File > Edit pymolrc).
