Dear Colleagues,
This is is very sad news.
Vijayan combined a very active research programme with his leading domestic
initiatives whether it was an Indian synchrotron radiation source, the ESRF
participation by India or supporting structural molecular biology initiatives
in India. Also he often led the Indian national delegation to our international
meetings.
I vividly recall our research collaboration on molecular dynamics of the
saccharide bound peanut lectin crystal structure, including hosting Dr Gail
Bradbrook from Manchester for a research visit on this.
When I read Vijayan’s Memoires recently I got an even bigger and deeper picture
of his upbringing and contributions to science. Also, knowing just how polite
Indians are, his criticisms of the British ‘rule’ of India really hit home.
Rest in peace Vijayan, you will be very much missed.
Yours sincerely,
John
Emeritus Professor John R Helliwell DSc
