Dear Gerlind, Even though I am also not completely familiar with the US system, I think the position is for more than one year. Indefinite if you get tenure after a certain time (perhaps after five years). In this case the first five years are secure. But the Univ only pays you for 9 months out of 12 each year. You can then pay yourself out of a grant for the other 3 months - if you get a grant that allows paying yourself of course. Still seems a bit unfair, but at least it is not just a 9 months one time contract.
