It became too popular, and created a monoculture that was a prime target
for malware. It also didn't start out that way, but it evolved into an
OS that would only run on one architecture, with one preferred CPU vendor; Intel. There is a core of hardware that is required, but almost
no one runs with that anymore, and the drivers for video, audio, and
networking come from different companies with varying quality and stability. Finding those drivers for anything other than the most recent
releases can be difficult.

Then, there is the history of the business practices of the company that produces it.
