Regarding XEROX, i think that the project was to large for them to do while having a proprietary mindset (we want to design the whole stack, except some applications but we want to design the main one TOO.) This included seeing Ethernet as a proprietary technology which could be used to lock out the competition, Which turned out to be a tall order.
