The same can be, and was, said about Unix. IRIX, Solaris, SunOS, AIX, HP-UX, OpenServer, UnixWare, what have you. They were all Unix operating systems, if not actually licensed to use the Unix name. Yet they were as different from each other as different Linux distributions can be.
Microsoft has even had this problem with Windows 3.x, Windows 9x, and NT / 2k.
