CDE Experts: I have an implementation of CDE running on CentOS as a VM running on a PC. More specifically, I have a Windows 7/10 PC running VMWare Workstation Pro 10/12. As a VM within VMWare Workstation, I have a CentOS 7.X OS running the CDE (2.2.3 or 2.2.4) as the graphical target (instead of Gnome/KDE). The CDE runs our proprietary Applications via the FrontPanel.
I have been asked to get CDE running on X-Win32 18 instead of my current architecture. I have found a "CDE Desktop" connection within X-Win32 18 that should work. I am no X-Win32 18 expert, but I believe if I "point" X-Win32 18 to the CDE code, it should display on the PC. So I used one of my VMs running CDE 2.2.4 as the "host" from X-Win32 18. When I launch the X-Win32 18 connection, I see the CDE splash screen display on the PC. The splash screen stays displayed (and the hour glass cursor) for some amount of time (about 5 minutes). During this time, I see a dtterm (sometimes two) window appear (and lately an error window from the text editor - "ERROR: A dtpad server on "my VM host" is already serving this display) on top of the splash screen. The splash screen will disappear eventually leaving the dtterm window(s). It appears to be stuck in "dthello", as I see the dthello process on my VM "host" (/usr/dt/bin/dthello -file /usr/dt/copyright). I sometimes get debugging information from X-Win32 18, and it is not helpful. The debugging info shows a lot of X11 forwarding messaging taking place. At the end, I get "Server unexpectedly closed network connection" followed by "FATAL ERROR: Server unexpectedly closed network connection". I have tried to get debugging from dthello, but all I can find is from dtlogin. Any suggestion on how to proceed and get past the "stuck" splash screen? Feel free to respond to the email list or me personally. If you respond to me, I will post a summary to the list of suggestions received (and of the ultimate solution). Thanks for the help.
