I can get a stair stepping easily enough on most terminal emulators (this was
Solaris 10 CDE dtterm):
$ stty -onlcr
$
$
$
$ stty sane
$
$
$
So maybe for some reason, it was bringing up the pseudo-terminal with the wrong
tty modes. :-)
