My dtpad (Slackware 15, CDE 2.5.2) also erases the paragraph

Unlikely - just installed 2.5.2 from FreeBSD ports and dtpad works fine
there, too. I'd check with xev and maybe some other tools what events
really are produced by your mouse and the keyboard. Maybe something related
to locale and/or keyboard settings.
