  Possibly because you are attaching the CD to the ATAPI device, like
hdd, rather than ide-scsi? When you mount the CD, do you use /dev/sr0 or
/dev/hdX as the device?

  If the "upgraded" kernel had ide-cd built-in instead of as a module,
you may have to put something like hdd=ide-scsi in your init string.
