The names of those 2 packages in RH 7.0 are:
cdrecord-1.9-2
xcdroast-0.98-1
So its good news to hear they work. The gcc compiler that
RedHat use in 7.0 was a snapshot out of GNU's CVS
repository labelled 2.96 . The GNU people were not amused
that RedHat did that and have bumped their internal gcc
development number to 2.97 . GNU's next compiler release
will be called gcc 3.x . Now the 2.96 compiler cannot build
the linux kernel so RedHat include another (older,
egcs-2.91.66) compiler called kgcc. RedHat assure us that
almost all user space packages in RH 7.0 were built and
tested with gcc 2.96 .
Now, like most of us, Joerg doesn't know what caused
the originally reported failure and he is free to
kick his favourite scapegoat. However, looking at the
reported output from cdrecord:

why does cdrecord output what looks like rubbish when
the kernel is reporting errors?
When cdrecord is having problems and a user is
looking for some baseline information about the linux
kernel, then it would be preferable if they took my
advice to see what may be happening rather than to resort
to further cdrecord scanning programs. It seems like
a waste of my time to monitor this newsgroup and
give advice concerning linux problems if minutes
after I post, Joerg Schilling replies typically
countermanding whatever I have suggested. Casual readers
of this newsgroup may think that Joerg is expert
on all matters to do with cd writing. Where his
knowledge overlaps with others, perhaps he should let
the 'others' hold centre stage for a brief time.
