Disk Type Error

I'm trying to get a previously unused WPI 622-CDR drive running 
under Linux (RH 6.1) using CDRecord 1.9.  I have tried several 
dummy writes and I always get an error message "Cannot get disk 
type."  Does that mean that something specific is wrong -- or is it 
just a catch-all sort of message?
