What do you have to do get driver support for a particular CD RW drive?
If the drive connects to Firewire, do you need to write a driver for firewire? same again Parallel Port ? same again USB? same again PCMCIA? If driver is proprietary can somebody still write a driver for linux without it being open source. If somebody wrote a shared library and then distribute an app/driver with this shared lib.
