Ok, removing /dev/sg1 worked. I just renamed it to old_sg1 and cdrecord -scanbus worked.
I still would like to figure out what went wrong. Exclusive lock sounds more like the truth. How would I check if that's what it was. BTW, what is the purpose of /dev/sg* devices? My disks are /dev/sd* and cdr is /dev/scd*. I guess I'll be reading a lot this weekend. I remember from school that mixing coffee and tea works well for the purpose. Tastes owful, though. I would still appreciate help on installing a new driver. The include file is the one that came with kernel. I got that. but for the rest? do I just '#gcc sd3119' and put the driver into proper place? Thank you all for help. I will try to use the cd-writer tonight.
