It is, I've got such a drive too. It's an AOpen 20x10x40 drive, 
which used to work with cdrecord (albeit not at higher speeds than 
4x) but now gives the same "no error" messages you're getting. I 
put it in a Windows box where it worked fine with Nero.

Perhaps these drives have automatic OS detection and break when they 
detect Linux?
