Maybe that kernel has a bug in the scsi emulation layer.  Try a
different kernel and see what happens then.

Hmm, that version number almost looks like a prerelease of 2.3, which is
actually not surprising for a redhat *.0 release.  It shouldn't affect
cdrecord though.

Given it started when you upgraded to redhat 8.0 I would suspect the
kernel as most likely cause, and perhaps other system libraries (libc)
as slightly possible causes.

You could build your own kernel (2.4.20 is out) and see if that fixes
it.
