Maybe that kernel has a bug in the scsi emulation layer. It shouldn't affect cdrecord though. [details removed] Given it started when you upgraded to redhat 8.0 I would suspect the kernel as most likely cause, and perhaps other system libraries (libc) as slightly possible causes.
