If I'm correct Linux uses glibc2 with kernels >2.0.xx. Glibc2 is another
name for libc6 under linux (/lib/libc.so.6).
Try to download the other binary. And read the README carefully to set
the CDR_SECURITY variable.

I'm not sure when the mandrake version has been branched off from cdrecord, 
but as far as I know the DVD-functions are probably completely different 
from cdrecord-prodvd.

DVD-RW works fine here, same drive, firmware 1.0c, 2.4.20-vanilla,
cdrecord-prodvd-1.11a40-i586-pc-linux-gnu, Debian testing.

Why don't you buy at least 1 DVD-RW? Much better for testing purposes.

For plain data you can also try growisofs for both DVD+R and DVD-R:
