> Does this mean the Pioneer drive can't burn 8x (or higher) media > at 4x?
The Pioner 106 does not burn some 8x DVD-R media at any speed. I say "some" here because I haven't tested everything, but I can say for certain that it won't burn Verbatim 8x DVD-R. Verbatim seem reasonably good quality media to me, and I never had any trouble with their 4x, and I've used all four DVD+-R(W). Sony 8x DVD-R seem to work a little better but I'm never sure whether I can trust it since DVDs don't have a quality check like CDs do. There must be some significant difference between 4x and 8x media which would require another firmware upgrade to handle. Needless to say, Pioneer weren't interested. This goes both ways. Keep in mind that when it outright barfs at 4x but appears to work at 2x, it's probably only marginal and you shouldn't rely on it.
