I wondered too and questioned that, and got my head bitten off on the dvdrtools list by some self-proclaimed jerk who makes it his mission to make sure that everyone uses cdrecord-cum-dvdpatch for -R, because it's the only way to ensure compatible good-quality recording. Or some such thing, to do with different recording strategies and different principles on which the various formats are based. A DVD+ -based burner has to engage some kind of emulation for DVD- media (character-based vs block-based), and the emulation in the burner firmware can't be trusted. Part of the reason why the Pioneer 109/110 models got so lousy results for one of the media types. Funny thing is though that none of the cdrecord dvd-patchers ever speaks up. Personally I've used growisofs for years now and it works fine, though I don't use -RW because +RW is just alround more convenient. No trouble with the -R media I burnt that I'm aware of.
