Looks like you missunderstood OpenSource and forks.

The version that comes from the Copyrightholder is the official one.
In this case there is no such official one, the "official" growisofs
doesn't do CD, the "official" cdrecord doesn't do DVD. So neither of
them are open source programs which do CD *and* DVD. There are patched
versions of cdrecord which do both, and there seems to be no other
similar program which is available as open source and does both CD and DVD.
WHen there's only one choice people choose it every time.
