Hi. I'm a software engineer for consumer embedded products.

I'm considering this topic on my own. It means that it is not my
company's opinion.

TL;DR
- The stakeholders and positions are different about this topic.
- This topic is the fork cost issue in my understanding.

## Point view

Ideally, all people use the latest stable version. My experience says
software expiration date is for 2-4 years. If it's over 5 years, the
migration cost is large.

This topic is the fork cost issue in my understanding. If the LTS
version is so old. the cost is huge by changing API and somethings.
Who spent the cost? stable kernel maintainers, sub system maintainers
and related people. It is not sustainable. I agree linux kernel
community. I'd say it is not good news for distributors. In other
words, This issue is fork cost vs upgrade cost.

I've noticed that this topic has some stakeholders and positions.

- The kernel maintainer of linux distribution
- SoC vendors engineers and BSP kernel users
- The in-house linux distributor for consumer products (like NAS,
Camera and something)

It's important point is that most users use just linux distribution
and bsp kernel in fact.

## Time Range

- Debian releases every 2 years normally. Support time is 3 years.
- Ubuntu LTS releases every 4 years. Support time is 4 years.
- SoC tape out is for 2~5 years since design.

How to maintain the last 1 or 2 years in linux distributors?
I think a good idea what ubuntu's HWE kernel. It's like rolling update
for 6 months.

## BSP kernel

As you know. BSP kernel is given by SoC vendors.

I could get data sheets and application notes of SoC when I was my
first career. However, vendors do not recently. It's just gives BSP
kernel. It means that it's difficult to mainalinnes by SoC users.Do
BSP users have options after EoL? (I know some vendors try to
mainline.)

## Others
This topic is not only linux kernel. all oss assets in my
understanding. linux is great. it provides stable versions and life
cycle clearly . Anyway, I will focus on discussing linux kernel in
this study group.

Sorry for not having a clear idea and opinion. It's similar dump ideas.
Anyway, I look forward to discussing it tomorrow.

Regards,
Matsumoto
