Cemetery Report: 4/21/07 No Dumping............in a cemetery???????? List user
5/10/2007, 11:13:52 AM Out of the garage at 7:03am and heading back to Waterloo, N.Y. to try and finish up there and surrounding areas. At 7:51am I entered St Mary's Cemetery, Waterloo and here's what I found.......................... Lafe Hanrahan 1891-1968. Egglantine LeBrun 1894-1978 & Zotique LeBrun 1892-1979. Michael S. Bertino PFC US Army WW 2 Born Nov 5, 1921 and died Dec 11, 1944, Killed in Action. < I wonder if he bought the farm? Not a joke in this case......................Killed in action veterans is how the term, "bought the farm" came about. They say starting with WW1 a father or son who was killed in action and had a life insurance policy, usually gave the remaining family enough money to pay off the mortgage on the farm. Thus, "bought the farm". And if that isn't enough, usually what happens while walking the cemeteries, I'm constantly reminded of history by just about everything I see, hear, smell etc. Its a great time for thinking and reflecting. Funny or serious. Did you know there are still till this day 3,000,000 missing veterans from WW 1 ? Hard to believe but that many have never been accounted for................... WW2 there are still 78,000 missing and unaccounted for. Just there, between the two, that's a staggering amount of veterans missing. And here is a horrible statistic, during WW 2 17,000 soldiers were accidentally buried alive. And the custom of firing guns at veterans funerals was started in Finland way back in history for the purpose of scaring off ghosts of the deceased, course today for the purpose of honouring the dead. Enough of the above for now, but just an example of what I sometimes think of when reading some of the random headstones as it doesn't always come out funny or sarcastic............................................... John Paul Pigman Sr. 1952-2002. Victor N. Boisvert 1881-1954. Lillian E. LePage 1888-1954. LOL, where I happen to be standing in this "Dead Bed" is now right along side a train track by maybe 10 feet or so. And a slow moving train is coming, just stopped to look. It is the Finger Lakes Railway train going by. The engineer is hanging out of the window of the diesel and looked down at me, I waved, he waved and also tooted the air horn.
