Cemetery/Trip Report: July 4-July 10, 2006 Main, Pain and Plain List user
7/12/2006, 1:35:56 PM July 4th started for me at 5:45am when I pulled out of the garage for a trip north, then north east then south east, and further east and back west and back east and then north west and finally south west. It was a good trip but not exactly as planned, but there's always next time......... Headed right up Route 81 (NY State) north and got to Canadian customs at 7:30am. I had one car in front of me. When I pulled up, I heard laughing, it was ________, my old border crossing friend. We chatted a while and then took off. Now, between my house and Canadian customs I saw 9 deer, 25-30 turkeys and 4 hawks. So it was a good morning for wildlife watching along the road. Now I'm on the 401 headed East, to Route 15 north to Augusta, Ontario. I got the photos of the Pardee monument for the one on here interested in that family. That was at 8:50am and was there maybe 5 minutes, remembered right where the marker was. But, since I had been there a couple months ago, lots of toppled stones, so............the vandalism continues. Now back on 15 North to Merrickville, but before I got there I stopped along the road to pick up a turtle. No, he wasn't hitchhiking. It was a swampy area where I see turtles crossing everytime I go through there. So, just picked him up and placed him on the other side of the road in the direction he was heading. And at that point when you put them down, then they move real fast. He was small pizza size and really wanted to bite me, but didn't. Shortly after that I saw a brown llama along the road. Got to Merrickville at 9:00am and left there at 10:30am............Roger talks a lot..................... Made it to Ottawa, checked in and dropped all the luggage. Stopped to see Tim and take a break with some great coffee. Then got serious and headed for Notre Dame Cemetery on Montreal Road. I spent an hour in the cemetery office. It was a fruitless, waste of time as the questions I had, couldn't be answered. They had the answers, but they weren't allowed to tell me. RENTERS, that's a new term I've never encountered before in cemeteries. After a 15 year burial, they haul the remains away and aren't allowed to tell where they are buried. I did on my own, find one of my great great grandparents markers and other family members. Some of my finds I wont explain as, you, will be receiving the photos and you can read your own info. So, I got 2 photos of LaFlamme. Henry T. Clement born March 28, 1916 and died Feb 5, 1994 wife Beatrice M. Clement born April 13, 1917 and died Jan 7, 2000. Next was one Casavant photo. Joseph Clement born Jan 22, 1898(<no death date) wife Helena Mary Muldoon born Nov 11, 1901 and died April 11, 1958. About this time an old guy comes walking up to me, and he's dressed for a safari, I guess, asks if I'm Best Bill. He says, "I ran into two women looking for you." Are they alive I asked? ..........He said he'd tell them he found me.................LOL Hmmmmmmmmm Its now raining and I don't see anyone, alive that is, while I'm under some trees staying dry. Eventually that stopped and out amongst the stones again. I got only 7/10ths of a mile walked when Fran and Marielle finally caught up to me. Guess I'm hard to find? We decided to head to the closest Tim's and when I got back to the car, there was a large note on the windshield, "Don't Move"..........guess they'd been looking for a while..............LOL Never did make it back to the cemetery that day. I think it was close to dark when we left Tim's. Two very nice ladies, but gee, they talk a lot.......................... :) It was very enjoyable. You'll see I'm only using first names, they can identify themselves if they like, and no name for the border guard, we'll keep his name mute. Sleep, sleep.............sleep............................ July 5th, Saw Tim for breakfast................... 8:14am back into Notre Dame Cemetery. The Right Honourable Sir Wilfred Laurier, 1841-1919 Prime Minister-Liberal Party. Another LaFlamme photo. This next guy was just short an ER from being a tinker........... We looked around the cemetery for a long time together until, Maude went to move her car. Dead, dead, dead..................well, it is a "Waste Away Park". I did offer her a room in one of the mausoleums, which surprisingly she said she could handle.................. :) Well................after CAA arrived and charged her battery, she was instructed to drive the car for a while around, and around and around the cemetery to charge the battery and when she was done, park down by the office/entrance in case they have to come back. So, I continued on while Maude went site seeing through the "Oldie But Goodie Grounds"...............once in a while a wave as she went by............................LOL Ellen E. (< so McD is a full last name) Lilith E.V.Bennett beloved wife of M.L.C.Weber(< no dates). Margaret O. Ballance 1881-1966( < I wonder, could the O. be for Off ??) Kenneth Blow died 8 Aug. 1909 aged 32 years. In loving memory of George Henry Millen born at Glens Falls, New York Oct 23, 1838 and died at Hull, Quebec Nov 13, 1928. We vacated this "Not Here Preserve" at 5:00pm and headed for Tim's . I walked 3.4 miles here today. Maude and I talked, I had the chili deal..................soon after Maude had to get going back to Montreal, was it really the car? or was it the chili??????????????? Only Maude knows for sure.............but, Maude is lots of fun and nice to talk to..............................Hmmmmmmmmm, ahhhhhhh, she does talk a lot.................. :) Decided to call it a night. July 6th, after breakfast at Tim's, I entered St. Joseph's Cemetery in Orleans, Ontario. I walked the entire cemetery which was 1.7 miles. I only took photos and will list the names, Lafleur, Cleroux, Lachaine, Gravel, Cayer, Laflamme, Villeneuve, Laurin, Boucher and Paradis. So many benefited by that walk. I vacated this "Shrivel Acres" at 9:55am. Returned to Beechwood "Spoil Space" to finish at 10:05am. Rankin Sproule born Jan 25, 1852 and died May 4, 1921. Next a historical figure................. Hmmmmmmmmmmm Got Arnoldi photos. Agar Yeilding died March 25, 1873 aged 59 years. Now I'm in the front garden section. As I said, this is a rich cemetery. Gardens, flowers, odd trees and shrubs, pools with fish and water falls, beautiful. One odd flower the size of a soft ball and purple, very pretty but smells horrible.......................Speaking of smells, earlier in the day for a few hours there was a strange heavy smell throughout the "Body Bin", I really expected to come upon someone behind the next monument doing drugs because of the odd smell. I later found out, it was burn the bodies day, cremation smell, not a good smell nor a bad smell, just very odd smelling. I was walking through the vapors of dead people.................does second hand smoke apply here?????????? LOL Back to the final section, this is the section you also get your ashes spread around, so some of those flowers and shrubs are part former people. I wonder who got that stinky flower? Way at the far end was a large Petitclerc monument and I got a photo for Roomy. Now finished with Beechwood and I sat down to cool off and rest on one of the benches. Five minutes later Denis and Suzanne Ouimet pulled in, great timing. They took me out for supper and it was time to call it a day. I walked 5 1/2 miles in Beechwood today. Wonderful "Crumbled City". July 7th at 8:21am I walked into Tim's in Rockland , Ontario for breakfast after packing up from my last nights stay in Ottawa. Five minutes later Denis walked in, five minutes later Suzanne walked in. Sure have great timing up here.......................eventually we ended up at Denis's abode, he was pretty much ready for us to leave in his car and mine and almost out of the driveway, when we had a fast change of plan. We decided to take only my car and head to Plattsburgh, N.Y. which would mean me returning to Ottawa instead of heading south to Ticonderoga. We are off now with both in the same car. Going through Montreal area, Dorval I looked down over the bridge as we went through Roomys area but didn't see him...................Montreal traffic was a bit sluggish. Made it to Route 15 south to enter N.Y. State at Champlain, wrong move........................Denis and I sat there 1 hour before we could get in, tons of cars entering. So we got to Plattsburgh at 1:00pm instead of noon. Got a great room, Denis got the top bunk and I took the bottom...................well...............actually we each had a queen bed. Nice big room, fridge, micro wave etc. It also has a Perkins restaurant attached. Joan Perkins from B' ville eats there a lot......................... we got settled and hit some book stores, I did good :) and checked out the area. We ended up at St. Peter's Cemetery in Plattsburgh............... Steve Martineau 1899-1961 wife Irene Garrant(< no dates) (photo) Charles E. Leclair born Oct 8, 1865 and died Sept 30, 1914 wife Delie Cartier born Jan 27, 1860 and died June 21, 1930. Mary Elizabeth Millington McNamara born Jan 6, 1918 and died Sept 13, 1995 "Do not stand at my grave and weep I am not there, I do" (< I do what???????????) Got photos in here of Ouimets and that was pretty much the end of this one except for...................I see Denis walking towards me from the area he covered, as I'm looking at him I see smoke in the distance, or ?????????????? could that be something I've never seen before?? Well, it turned out to be smoke. I thought maybe an eternal flame. Denis said he smelled smoke. We walked to the source, and there in the hollow at the base of a tree it was on fire. Probably kids with nothing better to do. It was into the tree pretty good. But, we are in a cemetery on a hot day and no water.......................well, Denis practicing his fire fighting skills with the only liquid that was available, he just about put the whole thing out by peeing on it. Just then a pickup truck stopped, it was the cemetery caretaker. We told him what was going on and he went and got a bucket of water to finish off the fire. Did I mention I got photos while Denis was putting it out? Well, maybe I better not................. Turns out this guy is French Canadian and we are going to assist him in his search. Mike Racicot-Rascoe, nice guy. I walked 2 miles in this one and Denis gets the credit for putting out the tree fire..............sure hope it wasn't someone's family tree.........with pee................... :) Later that evening we went to Perkins for supper, but not your normal supper.............. I ordered dinner, Denis ordered dinner. We waited, dinner arrived, my plate was set in front of me, Denis's plate was set down in front of him, I guess the waitress, Denis and I all looked at his plate at the same time, he had ordered a side of carrots, they were there, hot and steaming, but, in a plastic bag.................LOL Guess the cook didn't take them out of the bag. The waitress quickly grabbed the bag, ripped it open, poured it into his plate and abruptly left the area....................I didn't stop laughing the rest of dinner. Denis said they were good though..................... July 8th we hook up with Karen from Chazy and we all head to Keeseville Genealogical Society, but close to an hour early, but, Keeseville has a coffee shop................into the society we go and I purchase the books I had ordered plus a few more............. :) Both Denis and Karen are busy so I head out on my own to check local "So Long Trenches". 12:19pm brings me to Evergreen Cemetery in Keeseville on Route 22/Grove Street. It was established 1849. Louis Riel born Aug 8, 1846 and died April 6, 1928 (photo) Walked .9 miles in this "Parting Park" and vacated at 3:10pm. Went back and picked up Karen and Denis. Headed back to Plattsburgh and Karen had asked us over that evening for cold drinks, we were considering this invitation until............... 7:00pm Denis says, "can you find out where the emergency room is around here?" Down to the front desk I went, got the directions and off to the emergency room we went with Denis having chest pains. It was a short trip and found I can imitate a siren real good..............LOL If you say "chest pain" in an emergency room you get taken care of right then and there. I got to tag along and watch. Denis had been having heart palpitations for about 4 hours and they wouldn't subside with pain. He is due for surgery to correct this. He got 4 nurses, 2 doctors, and electricians nightmare in wires attached to him, also a crash cart in the hall with 2 more nurses standing by, and what he wasn't able to see, a nurse behind him readying a super large needle, I would guess that one would go right into the heart and which they didn't have to use. I V and shots and more shots, machine showed things coming back to normal, alarm sounds red flashing lights and another series of shots into the IV, so it was a hectic time in there until they finally got him stabilized. Did I mention the part where they had to get one of the grounds keepers and his hedge trimmers to cut a path through all his chest hair so they could get all those wires to stay attached? As all this time Denis just lays there watching, picking up piles of hair and dropping them on the floor into another pile. Did I mention I smuggled my camera in? Yep, I got photos of this operation. LOL Well, by 11:45pm they released Denis, he was back to normal and needless to say we didn't go to Karen's house..........he was normal the rest of the trip. Should have ALL the photos by Friday. :) Because of the phone number Denis originally phoned for the Genealogical Society in Winooski, Vermont, he asked for the guy who was apparently the head of the society, only to find out he had died. Sorry for the guy but I had a good laugh as Denis was in a spot with the widow at that point. But........but.......................well, now we don't know if we are going there Monday or not. So we decided to go to Burlington, 3 books stores later I got another pile of books. Denis spotted a sports bar as the soccer championship game was on. Denis watched the game, I watched the people and didn't know they were playing the game anyway. Drank my ginger ale and was unconcerned whether the team from Greenland won or not, but I think Peru won................................ Got out of there, thank God the game finally ended, glad they only do that every 4 years. What do we find next, a "Salutation Station" on Elmwood Ave in Burlington. Asamel Stacy died Aug 17, 1850 aged 72 years. Samuel Hickock born at Sheffield, Massachusetts Sept 4, 1774 and died June 4, 1849. Cassius Castle 1824-1904. Charles F. Amasa Drew died April 8, 1889 age 77 years. Prentiss J. Kent 1834-1919. Capt. Pownal Deming born in Lyme, Connecticut April 9, 1795 a Revolutionary War Vet.(< no death date). Charlotte wife of Daniel Blush died Jan 14, 1814 aged 24 years. Mary M. _ _ arty wife of Daniel Kern was born in Montreal, Canada East Jan 14, 1828 and died at Burlington Oct 25, 1861. Daniele S. Miller nee Poulet born at Louviers, Eure, France Jan 13, 1842 and died March 23, 1882. Arad Merrill died Jan 22, 1849 age 66 years. Lydia D. Merriam died April 18, 1867 age 57 years. And the last find here and an important historical figure................. Frances "Fanny" Montresor second wife of Ethan Allen(< of Revolutionary War fame) died Oct 13, 1834. She grew up in N.Y. State but with strong Tory connections, she was attractive and well educated.(photo) Walked 1.4 miles in this "Smorgasbord of Decay". Called it a day and returned to the motel and finally dinner across the street in an Italian restaurant for veal parmesan. Dennis makes another call to a live person this time, and they agree to open the Winooski Genealogical Society for us on Monday morning. I got more books.................Denis got many more Ouimet names. I left him there and went out and visited a couple more "Solitary Confinement Stations" but there just wasn't much of anything in those to report on. It was to hot anyway............... We left there around 2:00pm and headed back to Rockland, Ontario. This time a fast crossing at Cornwall , only a few minutes and by 7:00pm we were back at Denis's home. By 7:15pm I was back on the road heading home as they called for rain on Tues. Route 17 west, to 417 west to 416 south to 401 west and when I was going by Brockville, Ontario the rain started. It was so heavy most on the 401 pulled to the side of the road. I kept going and so did the rain. I was maybe 3 minutes at customs for the 1000 Island Bridge customs and back to N.Y.S. Got gas once over the bridge then non stop till I pulled into the garage at 11:15pm, so 4 hours from Rockland to home isn't bad considering the heavy rain all the way home. Normally, 3 1/2 hours. For the whole trip I walked 20.1 miles in cemeteries and the entire trip was 1025 miles. I now own all the parish registers that the Keeseville Society has published for Clinton County, New York, which includes places such as Churubusco, Champlain, Peru, Redford, Dannamora,Coopersville, Moores Forks, Moores, Keeseville, also Clinton County marriages 1830-1880, also 3 volume set of headstone inscriptions for Clinton County, also 3 volume set of The History of the North Country, which includes Jefferson, St. Lawrence, Oswego, Lewis and Franklin Counties, also History of St. Lawrence County, and finally 2 volumes of marriages at St. Albans, Vermont(< yes Dave, your family names are in there).
