List user 9/3/2008, 1:23:47 PM Out the big door at 5:38am and its still kind of dark. Days are getting much shorter. Its 44F/7C, and its finally getting down to some nice Temps. for me...................drops another 20 degrees and it'll be just about right. This time heading north on Rt. 81 and there's lots of fog. 6:43am I am going by the Arsenal St. exit at H2O-town, N.Y. About 5 miles north of Arsenal St. I see the first bit of wild life, a lone Turkey standing alongside the road. And then I had a hallucination of gravy, dressing, sweet ' tators and warm apple pie. Hmmmmmmmmmm! 7:13am brings me to Oakwood Cemetery in Theresa, N.Y. I was immediately impressed by its large size. Thought this would be a rather small one of an hour or less exploration. As I remember, it was well over three times that much to get through it. Robert B. Salter 1928-1993 (P) By the way, this is extreme comfort for me, I can actually see my breath for the first time since spring. This is nice..................... Herschel W. I've decided to try and rate the cemeteries. 4+ tomb stones would be the highest rating. 1 or less tomb stones would be the extreme lower end and nothing to be proud of. This cemetery I'm in now would receive a 4 stone rating as I've now seen most of it and it is well cared for. It would have received a 4+ rating only because I have seen a few that actually go to that higher level. I have one in mind from 4 years ago at Adams Center, N.Y. I think that had been gone through with a manicure set, it was awesome. Charles B. Soules(< I didn't see any of these wondering around here) died June 18, 1876 age 54 years(P) Suel Wilson 1809-1889. Walked .6 miles in this "Final Foxhole" and vacated at 12:46pm. 1:11pm brings me back to Antwerp , N.Y. as I have looked at this Hillside Cemetery in the past and it was to late one time and the other time it was to bug infested. See what happens this time...................... First thing I noticed from the beginning till the end and starting about 1 block away is where it turns into Fort Drum, 10th Mountain Division and I am on kind of the north end boundary of this Fort where the live fire is. Hillside Cemetery is just that , a good part of it is on a hillside which gives a great view of Warthogs. If you don't know what they are, please check with your search engine. Its called a tank buster jet, a very ugly military plane but extremely devastating, well, for the enemy. They were making their runs over part of the cemetery and then I could see them line up with their artillery range and fire their awesome machine gun on the front of the jet. It didn't make the conventional noise, but it sounded like a high pitched brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, course where it hit on the ground I couldn't see because of the tree line. Then they would make runs and drop bombs and I had to catch onto this routine. It was like someone giving me a dull hit on the chest(shock wave), the feeling of a big base drum close by in a parade is another way to describe it. But that shock wave hit me each time 4-5 seconds before I saw the smoke of the exploding bomb. Which it had to rise above the trees so I could see the plume of smoke. Then they had canons going off on the ground and or maybe tanks firing and land based machine guns. Two things came to mind, first, no one in Antwerp, N.Y. has an intact china cabinet or shelves on their walls. 2nd thought, if I start seeing tracer bullets, I'm out of here......................................this stuff was close. But, on leaving the village and all this going on, the village people(< not the group) paid no attention to it. I guess its like living next to an airport, people say after a while you don't hear the jets............................probably 'cause you've gone deaf. Jonathan Gates Born at Chesterfield, N.H. April 9, 1800 and died Nov 19, 1882. Tucked way up in the corner, in the extremely rough area of this cemetery, in other words, the part they don't care for and where there is lots of burials and stones, stands one lone blackberry bush. And it has the largest, easiest picking and sweet blackberries you'd ever want to find. But just that one bush. Well, I did my part, when I left that area it was one of the cleanest lonely blackberry bushes you'd ever wanna' see................... :) They were wonderful.............................. Ooops.............. warthogs are back strafing again. Charmis Mack 1852-1938. Ruccles Goodale 1803-1886. Someone is doing a very nice job here. Got home at 7:20pm. Another great day with the dead. Best Bill Looks like 8.1 miles walking for the day.
