Cemetery Report:March 28, 2010 "Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Rochester, N.Y. Part 3
List user 4/7/2010, 11:25:28 AM Once upon a time................................mmmmmmmmmmmmmm that's not it. A man walks into a cemetery and............................mmmmmm nah, that's not it either. Out the big door at 4:43am (that's sounds right) its 39F/4C and very dark. This is a test just to see if I can get through this today? At the end of the week I'll find out what's wrong with the back this time, but in the meantime, I'm anxious to get out to cemeteries as nearly all the snow is gone now. Heading back to Rochester, N.Y. to get more of Holy Sepulchre Cemetery finished and this will make the third trip there and I know there may be 3-4 more trips there before I get through the whole thing and I'm not expecting to walk any great distance today............................Remember, this is a 332 acre cemetery. So I headed west on Rt.90, exited at 45 and headed north on 490 to 590 North to 104 West to Lake Ave. exit. And at the top of the exit is a Tim's. :) Right on Lake Ave till I get to the cemetery. As I found where I had left off last year and pulled in, a herd of wild turkey were walking by, about a dozen or so. (2P) People who receive my Cemetery Photos have already seen those. They always say you have to start at the bottom.....................and my first encounter.................. John Bottomley died Nov 29, 1871 age 58 years. Charles J. Lotspike died March 26, 1891. Daniel Golding Born Ireland 1815 and died Dec 7, 1887 age 72 years. Charles E. Tone N.Y. Cpl. Co. M2 Regt. Mich. Cav., Civil War, 1841-1902 (P). VGNY died Nov 14, 1886, Civil War. Stephen F. Birmingham died July 1869 age 7 months (P). Cecelia Dee 1850-1928. John Connor Born at Co. Cork, Ireland and died Feb 21, 1882 age 47 years. Joan C. Twaig 1823-1906. As I've reported odd things in the past, of what I sometimes see in cemeteries and don't totally understand. About 20 headstones in front of me, a car stops along the driveway, a lady gets out and heads right over to a tree right along side of the driveway, that has a crotch in it(< the tree) and reaches into the crotch, retrieves something, carries it back to her car and leaves. Could this have been a drug pickup?????? Always something odd...........................And by the way, when I finally got down to where the tree was, I looked into the waist high crotch of the tree and there was nothing in it. I have noticed a few very small patches of snow left in here, of which are in the shade. Its now 8AM and I finally finished the first side of this cemetery. If you remember from last year, its on two sides of Lake Ave. And this side that I've just finished had all the Nun and Priest burials in it and all together it took about 2 complete days to complete. So now I'm across the street to start the largest portion of this cemetery of which I have not seen the length of nor the width, its a big one for sure and may be even bigger than last years, Mt. Hope cemetery, also in Rochester. But, least as far as I can see, it is flat, they got good real estate on this one. 8AM @ 41F/6C. David E. As I wonder around in here I always get some good thoughts and it seems to me the death industry and life are always fighting themselves. I hear and read where they are constantly bitching about running out of land for cemeteries, true to a point but its also self inflicted, so I don't feel a bit sorry for all the cities, towns and villages here and abroad. In the beginning of modern burials, you got a coffin, the pine box routine. That's what it should be and works well with nature, you know, the dust to dust type thing. But, big business came up with caskets, fine expensive woods(hard woods) and titanium and other metals and other exotic caskets to make it all look good. It also helps to preserve the whole thing and the body much longer. < defeating the purpose. Then in recent history how about a Vault to go along with that casket. Those things might as well be a bomb shelter. 1000 years minimum with them and maybe much longer. Did someone say they are running out of room? Sure, we are preserving them longer that's why. Depending on ground conditions, moisture & mineral content, a normal burial in a coffin may have the coffin rotted away 60-80 years. And the body at that point turned completely to bone. The British Isles are stacking burials in many cemeteries now and Australia has a rather newer approach, they stand you up when your buried. You get 3 standing to a one person plot in comparison to one laying down. Bottom line, if society and big business are going to keep preserving the remains, such as the vault theme, might as well keep your relative embalmed and sitting in your living room. We all need more nic-nacs and things to dust. They certainly aren't going any where in cemeteries now a days. Clarence E. Searchfield 1894-1963.(< guess that's like a debrie field) William C. Robarge 1876-1962. Anna M. Blackstock 1911-2001.(< that reminds me about 10 years ago, I went in to a Dunkin Donuts( I know, shame on me it wasn't a Tim's) and asked for a small black. Its been cloudy and overcast all day but no rain. I was told it was time to lock the gates, so, that's it for today. Walked 10.9 miles in this " Sickening Sense of Dread Territory"(< how's that one to start off this year? LOL), picked up 33 flags and left the gates at 5:13pm and its 48F/10C. As I'm heading down the road it started raining at 5:21pm, not bad timing at all. I should have been home about 6:57pm, but...........it was more like 7:57pm. I was having some navigating problems and after 8 pain pills for the day, I wasn't sure which end was up at departure time.So after driving 'round in circles for about an hour, I finally got myself headed in the right direction and did make it home. Actual mileage for the trip was 180 miles, not including the scenic side trip. I guess I'll stay to my maximum of 6 pain pills for the day instead of cheating with 8. But, I felt no pain and the day went by like minutes....................Zooooooooooooom It was another great day with the dead. Best Bill
