5/4/2011, 9:19:38 AM Finally, it stopped raining, least for today. Calling for a little breeze all day, dry, sun and a couple clouds. That doesn't sound to bad. Got up at 4AM and out the door at 4:42AM and its 44F/8C. This time I'll be heading south west into the Finger Lakes region. Mainly doing cemeteries between two of the Lakes, Seneca Lake and Cayuga Lake..............................which amounts to the, pointing finger and the other finger which isn't to nice.........................LOL 6:01AM brings me to Burgh Cemetery established 1796, off of Canoga Road in the Town of Fayette @ 44F/8C. By the way, sunrise was 6AM...............good timing. :) James Troutman 1833-1907. ( He smelled like dead fish................) Jame(< as carved) Silvers Sept 5, 1811 age 45 years. Catharine Pontius died May 15, 1820 age 30 years. William Gambee died July 21, 1890 age 61 years 3 months and 24 days. Mary Bookman died June 20, 1847 age 43 years and 3 months (P).(< now she's more like a book worm........) Diedrich Willers D.D. Born Bremen, Germany Feb 6, 1798 and died May 13, 1883. Walked .4 mile in this "People Ditch", picked up 1 flag and vacated at 6:32AM @ 44F/8C. 6:38AM brings me to Watts Road Jerusalam(< as they had it spelled) Cemetery. John Ansbarcer died Feb 11, 1844 66 years. Elizabeth F. Slotrey Born in England May 18, 1792 and died Nov 29, 1833. Ordessa Plate 1873-1876. (< and she had a sister names dinner..........) Walked .3 mile in this "Trench Town" and vacated at 6:57AM @ 41F/6C. 7AM brings me to MacDougall Road Cemetery just off of Rt. 120 @ 42F/7C. Stephen Trexler Born May 22, 1811 and died Dec 19, 1878. Leonard Priscoll died June 16, 1885 Civil War Vet. age 75. Believe it or not, this one was freshly mowed. Surprised they managed to get the mowing done in between all the rain. Walked .3 miles in this "Elevator to Heaven or Escalator to Hell" and vacated at 7:12AM @ 42F/7C. 7:23AM brings me to Rt. 336 Cemetery @ 45F/7C. Williampe Conover wife of Henry K. Dey Born Nov 10, 1821 and died Oct 31, 1881. Albert Jacques Born Dec 25, 1803 and died Feb 22, 1835. Christina Sevesen died Dec 31, 1875 aged 66 years 2 months and 16 days. Weibka V. Rahn 1838-1885. Louisa A. Andrews died at Bellevue Hospital New York City Nov 21, 1869 age 36 years and 9 months.( This place was a mental hospital, even though they had one locally at Willard which I'll be visiting later today) Mary Kidd died Jan 24, 1885 84 years and 9 days. Jeremiah Opdyke Born Feb 18, 1782 and died March 4, 1856. George Troutwein Born at Cemminger, Germany Jan 9, 1874 and died Nov 24, 1879. Lots of horse crap along side the road in this area. The Amish are in the area and have seening the buggies in the front yards but not so far today on the road. Saw a bunch of female Amish, young and old playing what looked like volley ball in the side yard of an old wooden church. Perletta Nuhn 1874-1987. Walked .4 miles in this "Going, Going, Gone Zone" and vacated at 9:10AM @ 47F/10C. 9:15AM brings me to Oak Hill Cemetery, Varick @ 49F/10C. Charles W. Now a vehicle came in and it was the caretaker and spent about 20 minutes listening to his stories. I finally called a holt to the stories and kindly broke the conversation and continued on. Here comes a little hot dog, very friendly and one of the reasons I carry a little package of dog biscuits with me, just to tease the dog I showed him the biscuit and ate one in front of him and din't give him one..................nah, not really, they're all for the dogs. Looking up its a really big hawk buzzing over my head. This is not an uncommon happening of past Cemetery Reports. So I stood there watching the bird go back and forth above my head, about the birds 5th pass just above my head, he drops a big.......................(bet you thought he crapped on me, didn't you?) feather. It landed maybe four foot in front of me. And its a really big hawk feather. Now, I suppose if I had been and Indian of some sort, that might really mean something. But, whatever, I reached over picked up the feather and stuck it in my new black hat for cemeteries. Sue was impressed and she took some photos of me, the hat and feather..............LOL. Paul A. St Germain 1909-1992. George F. Fleming 1874-1943. This is surely a beautiful sunny day, especially after about 3 weeks of rain everyday. Walked 2.2 miles in this "Lifeless Lawn" and vacated at 12:36Pm @53F/12C. 1:04Pm brings me to Willard Cemetery at Willard. Willard is a cemetery from a defunct mental health care hospital/ facility. Its no longer operational. There are a few old buildings still standing and looked mostly unused. But the facility is a jail now for drug addicts, drunks etc. The cemetery is marked on the map, but no where in the vicinity is there any indication that there is a cemetery around here. No signs, nothing. So finally I stopped and looked at a dirt road going up hill and out of site, but the road is blocked by a chain so no vehicles can go up the hill. So I took a chance and walked up there. That's where it was. After reading the book on this place it stated there was 5,700 burials here. When I got all done, maybe 80 to 100 were actually showing and they were only the military burials. There was a good sized old sign showing the Jewish section, at least the acre anyway. You could see no burials. The one nice thing I saw up there was lots of blue birds, flying around and in the trees. This mental health facility was in use for 126 years. Its right on the bank of Seneca Lake. In case you may be interested, I really enjoyed the book. Its called "The Lives They Left Behind" by Penney & Stastny. soft cover , 189 pages. Burr Bradley died May 24, 1818 age 80 years and 6 months. Walked .2 miles in this "Termination Terrace" and vacated at 4:30PM @ 58F/13C. Got home at 5:57Pm Drove 185 miles for the day. $44.00 in gas. That was 11 cemeteries for the day. 8.9 miles walking for the day. Another great day with the dead. Best Bill I was extremely surprised I did not find one soggy place for the whole trip. Cemeteries were very normal, and again, with all the rain for the past 3 weeks. I did no sinking into graves which I was trying to be very careful of this time as I thought it would be inevitable to drop down to visit someone..........LOL However, I did cross many cricks(creeks) and small rivers. They were really high and moving extremely fast. I got some good photos of them along the way. So this is the last Cemetery Report for.........................a while I guess. Weather and time caught up to me and if you read this on the 4th of May, I go into the hospital tomorrow for surgery #22, this time on the spine again for the 5th time. Don't know how long they will try and lay me up this time.................. But, when I return, I hope Schenectady , Vale Cemetery will be next.......................... Hey, I'm getting more cadaver bones put in, with 6 more screws and a plate.......................... they didn't say what was on the plate though.................... :)
