I was supposed to get up at the normal 4AM for cemetery trips. But I guess

Sue thought I needed an extra early start by accidentally waking me up at

3:40AM. I know its only 20 minutes but...................I had only gotten 4

hours sleep that night to start with. But I staggerd to make my coffee and

sat there drinking it a bit slower than usual. Once that was downed, I

perked right up and got at it, I was very anxious to get going on the first

trip of the season. But, I always look back at all those years I worked

nights, by choice, and this would be the time I was getting home and getting

ready to go to sleep, not wake up.

I was on my way in the new car I purchased a few weeks ago. Basically the

same car only brand new and its shinier and smells better. :) Still

headstone silver........................

I was on my way at 4:29AM, heading west on the N.Y. State thruway(toll road

which is Route 90) to exit 47, back to LeRoy to finish Machpelah Cemetery

that I had only finished half of last Fall, on my last trip.

I arrived at Machpelah Cemetery at 6:22AM after a quick stop at McDonalds

for a tall coffee to bring along.

As I start its 35F/2C with a bit of a breeze but a really gorgeous morning

and sunrise.

First thing I hear is a woodpecker hard at work. Scanned the trees and

there he was, my first sighting of a pileated woodpecker for this year.

( We interrupt this Cemetery Report for some information passed on to me

last year by a cemetery caretaker. The guy was hesitant to tell me his

secret, so I told him I wouldn't tell anyone until this year. Actually, I
don't

see why its a secret, even though I have never heard of it before. But, It

could answer some questions as to missing burials. It seems, at least in New

York State, that there was a $1 registration fee for each and every burial.

Now this doesn't have anything to do with the plot or headstone, its a

registration fee. And even though it was only $1 there were many people who

could not afford to pay it. If it wasn't paid, you were not listed in the

burials of that particular cemetery even though you were buried there. This

apparently went back to the early 1800's and the guy had no idea how late

this fee went other than he thought it was the early 1900's. By telling you

this now, there is no way of anyone knowing where the information came from

other than one of the cemeteries I visited last year, take your pick. I

still don't see why its a so called secret or still being kept a secret. I

would assume if you couldn't pay the $1 registration fee, you probably had
no

money for any kind of a marker for the grave. So, I would say this was an

ugly secret to keep and the reason why some cant find their ancestors if
they

were never recorded at a cemetery. On the other hand if you remember when

I did Notre Dame cemetery in Ottawa, Ontario, years ago, I was told they

rented plots and after a certain amount of time, if you didn't buy the plot,

you basically got kicked out, you were dug up and there is a so called

secret unidentified place in the cemetery there, they and others like them
were

buried in a common group burial, never to be found again. One of my Grand

Ancestors was amongst them. But againn, I found another just like that in

Levis, Quebec who was a grand ancestor and was reburied in a common

grave..........................................And you wonder why I keep
saying,

"Help keep the dead alive", < there's one good reason)

One last thing about this cemetery. In the main mausoleum is a beautiful

stained glass window by Tiffany. The unfortunate thing, I was only able to

see its beauty by a cemetery brochure with a coloured photo of it. Because
of

vandalism, theft etc. they have the window covered in thick plexy glass,

inside and out to protect it, so looking at it, at the mausoleum you can see

very little of it and very little colour.
