I get your point about the need of mucky-mucks to genuflect before the high-and-mighty, but why are the stakes higher ? BTW, since I follow the Times of India almost daily, it is no problem to agree with my friend's view of the Bharat media. News coverage is "weak" at best, Its value is in features, of which there are some pretty good ones every so often. HOWEVER, someone else besides native Bharatis is calling the shots. Take a look at TI a few times and you'll immediately see it. LOTS of white folks, especially women, are featured , way more than you would suppose, given India's population mix. I have no issues with whiteness, needless to say, but the Times goes way overboard. I mean, most actresses featured, for example, look like Snow White. But, contrary to the BJP interpretation, it is a STRANGE group of fundamentalist Christians who ceaselessly promote hot sex and supply all sorts of advice about sex products and services. The TI is most unusual, no matter how you look at it. I started reading it regularly when it changed its format to a very decent user-friendly layout from what it had been, really dreary and unartistic.
