What India was like for most Hindus prior the British Occupation. I agree, post-Independence India has improved dramatically in almost every dimension, and arguably Hinduism has as well. And yes, Hinduism is arguably more adaptable in that regard, which is a strength. But if you were comparing pre-British India with contemporary Islamic societies of the time, I'm not sure Hinduism would come out very far ahead. Even Gandhi acknowledged his debt to Jesus (he loved Christ, it was Christians and Christianity he couldn't stand). I can't speak to Islamic music, but certainly Islamic architecture has been profoundly beautiful, even if some of it was "borrowed" from Hinduism. When we were in Israel, our Jewish tour guide said he wished the Mosque of the Rock could be preserved even when the Messiah came and reclaimed that site: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dome_of_the_Rock My point was not that they are directly equivalent, but that you could pain equally bleak (or positive) pictures of both if you were sufficiently selective in your evidence. And who knows?
